What I’ve Learned From Posting on Bluesky (and How I’m Using It to Grow My Brand)
When I first started posting on Bluesky, I wasn’t sure what to expect. A Twitter alternative? Another social media platform destined to fizzle out? A hidden goldmine for honest conversations?
It’s a bit of all of the above but also something unique.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been experimenting with Bluesky, figuring out what works, what doesn’t, and how to use it to build a brand. Here’s what I’ve learned and how I’m leveraging it to grow my online presence.
1. Bluesky Is Built for Actual Conversations
Unlike Twitter and Facebook, which are characterized by algorithm-driven chaos, Bluesky still feels like a small, engaged community, which is both a challenge and an opportunity.
✅ Conversations feel more organic. Instead of shouting into the void, I’ve found it easier to engage in honest discussions.
✅ People respond – Even decent posts get buried unless you have a considerable following on other platforms. On Bluesky, responses feel more intentional.
✅ Less noise, more value – Since it’s still invite-only (as of now), there’s less spam and more substance.
📌 How I use this: I engage more personally than on other platforms. Instead of posting just for engagement, I jump into conversations, reply thoughtfully, and treat it like a networking space rather than just another content dump.
2. The Bluesky Crowd Doesn’t Like Hard Selling
Bluesky isn’t the place for spammy self-promo or aggressive marketing tactics—people see right through it.
🚫 Blatant “Buy my stuff” posts don’t work.
🚫 Traditional engagement bait feels forced.
🚫 People value authenticity over marketing tricks.
📌 How I’m using this: I focus on building relationships first instead of selling directly. I mention my eBooks and projects naturally in conversation, not as hard pitches. I share thoughts, experiences, and insights—and let that build credibility over time.
3. Niche Communities Matter More Than Going Viral
On Twitter or Instagram, virality is the goal. On Bluesky, it’s all about finding the right people.
🎯 Smaller, niche audiences are highly engaged.
🎯 You don’t need thousands of followers—just the right ones.
🎯 A well-placed reply can get more traction than a new post.
📌 How I’m using this: I’ve expanded my follows beyond my initial interests. While I started with primarily political accounts, I’ve branched into indie creators, writers, and business minds—the people most likely to align with my projects.
4. Posting Screenshots of Music Lyrics Was an Unexpected Hit
One of the most surprising things I’ve found is that my screenshots of album covers with lyrics get more engagement than expected.
🔹 It sparks nostalgia and discussion.
🔹 Music is a universal connector.
🔹 It keeps my content visually engaging.
📌 How I’m using this: I’m continuing to test and refine different post styles. Bluesky seems to favour short, punchy, relatable posts, and Music taps into that shared cultural experience.
5. Consistency Matters (But Not in the Way You Think)
Unlike Instagram or TikTok, where you must post constantly to stay visible, Bluesky allows for a slower, more natural approach.
✅ Posting every day isn’t required, but regular engagement helps.
✅ Quality over quantity—one strong post is better than five weak ones.
✅ Replies & interactions often bring more traction than standalone posts.
📌 How I’m using this: I focus on posting when I have something worth saying rather than feeling pressured to post daily. Instead of forcing engagement, I ensure that it’s insightful, funny, or thought-provoking when I post.
Final Thoughts: My Bluesky Strategy Going Forward
I’m still testing, tweaking, and learning—but here’s how I plan to keep using Bluesky to grow my brand:
🔥 Keep engaging in honest conversations instead of just broadcasting.
🔥 Avoid hard-selling—let people discover my projects naturally.
🔥 Expand my niche to reach more potential collaborators and readers.
🔥 Use music posts & other creative angles to build connections.
🔥 Post when I have something meaningful to say—not just to stay visible.
Bluesky isn’t perfect, and it’s still evolving. But for now, it’s a refreshing break from algorithm-driven nonsense, and it’s a great place to connect with people who care about what you have to say.
If you’re on Bluesky, let’s connect—I’d love to hear how you use it! 🚀
